The Bridal Run Begins….

Posted in dresses tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:00 am by aboutabride

Starting today, April 3rd, Filene’s Basement starts their world-famous Bridal Event:

“The Running of the Brides”….

Never heard of this??? Here’s the low-down:

An annual event held only in selected stores (Boston and Washington, DC have it twice a year, though), brides and their “supporters” line up early outside the department store door — sometimes even the night before. When the doors open, brides have to run towards the racks and grab as many dresses as they can to try on. Why the running?? Well, not only is this event very well attended by hundreds (thousands?) of brides, but the (potentially 3000 available) dresses are designer dresses as low as $250 and up to $700! It’s been recorded that in less than 60 seconds, the racks are completely bare and there is women changing and dresses flying everywhere! A few minutes later, if a bride hadn’t found the dress she wanted, then there is some potential trading going on.

So, if you are a bride on a budget or just want to get a fabulous deal…..here are the dates for the event:

April 3rd – Washington, DC
July 24th, Chicago, IL
July 31st – Washington, DC
August 21st – Boston, MA
October 16th, Cleveland, OH

Fashion Fridays #5 — Shimmering all the way!

Posted in dresses tagged , , , , , , , , at 8:39 pm by aboutabride

Isn’t this an eye-catcher?

It reminds of what people call the “glamour” ages….with actresses such as Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner and Betty Grable. This would be a perfect dress if you are planning a “classics” wedding or a formal “black and white” theme. Or, if you pretty much want your wedding to look like it’s straight out of a movie from the Turner Movie Classics channel!

So simple….yet, so elegant.

This is a Justin Alexander dress (Style #8281). It’s a strapless mermaid style dress with fringe beading and a chapel length train. What’s really neat about the designer is that in 2006, Justin Alexander was the proud recipient of the Debi Award for “Distinctive Newcomer” in the bridal gown industry.

Taking it to limit…and then only another 2,000 feet…

Obviously, you want to have your wedding and it’s exquisite details to stand out, represent you, make a statement about the love you share and about the forthcoming future. Well, how about a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as a way to say “We are the new Mr. & Mrs.”…

I thought a fun blog for today would be to highlight one of these records. That of, the World’s Longest Wedding Dress Train. Have fun reading but don’t get too many ideas! Some of these trains require bridesmaids and flower girls the size of some entire guest lists! 🙂 Can you say Cha-ching?  (Note: but if you do decide to go for something so wonderfully *drastic*, you definitely will need a consultant!)

Hint, hint.

Feb 18th, 2007: Current Record Holder
The longest wedding dress train measured 4,468 ft (1,362m)and was created by Andreas Evstratiou of the bridal shop, Green Leaf, in Paphos, Cyprus. It took 10 people three months and £8,000 (about $12,000) to make. The bodice alone features 3,000 Swarovski crystals and is worth £3,000 (about $4,500).

So you are thinking…”4400 ft…what else is around that size. Exactly how long is that?” Well, the Empire State Building in New York City (to its pointy antennae tip) is 1,472 ft (448m) high, the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada is 1,815 ft (553m) high and the Burj Dubai building in the United Arab Emirates is 2,257 ft (688m) high —- making this wedding dress train a little under TWO TIMES the height (length?) of the tallest building structure in THE WORLD! Crazy, eh?

Were you like me and just saw the train draping around and around down the length of this amazing building?

August 5th, 2006

The previous record holder was a wedding dress train measuring 3,949 ft (1,203.9m) and was made by Cindy Predhomme and France Loridan (both France) for ‘Une Semaine Chrono’ in Caudry, France.
Note: again, this was still taller/longer than the Dubai building!

June 1st, 1996

This wedding dress train measured (at that time!) a record 670 ft (204m). It was made by Hege Lorence and Rolf Rotsett. It was carried by 186 bridesmaids and page boys. It still was competing with the St. Louis Gateway Arch (at 630 ft/192 m!)

Obviously, there can only be one Guiness World Record, but each country can set it’s own regional record. The longest wedding dress in China is found in Guangzhou. The bridegroom had contracted a local tailor to make the 200.8-meter-long dress to echo the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. This set a new domestic record, with the previous record at 99 meters.

Here’s a picture.

Fabulous Fridays #4 – The “Off-Shoulder”

Posted in dresses tagged , , , at 6:22 pm by aboutabride

Make your groom go “off kilter” with this fabulous “off the shoulder” dress from Alfred Angelo/Piccone Bridal.

Off the Shoulder dresses are very subtlely beautiful…..exposed shoulders highlights femininity. This particular dress add an additional touch of sparkle with rhinestones, sequins and crystal beading at the shoulders and at the dropped waist – making or accentuating an hour glass figure. Imagine the lights at your reception just kissing all the glam on this dress! The result —- you glowing!

Pair this dress with some dangling earring and you will be breathtaking!

Fabulous Friday #3 – that “romantic” look…

Posted in dresses tagged , , , , , at 12:47 pm by aboutabride

This dress is a tribute to those who love classic love stories like Romeo & Juliet…..whose theme reflects more of a quiet and subtle beauty, but definitely classic, elegant and romantic.

It’s even called the “Julietta” dress.

Okay, so I know it’s not Friday…but I’ve been thinking about this dress since last week!

From Anjolique Bridal, it’s a strapless mermaid style dress with a dropped waist – hugs the body nicely and makes you look tall! 🙂

Definitely for those weddings that ooze elegance and sophistication and maybe a touch of vintage…
